Jonathon Harris
The Assumption of Memory
Memory is a slippery thing.
We all use it as we cast fragments of it into a complete picture - remembering someone or something. How we treat others, ourselves, and how we are treated. We remember how we lost, found, grieved, and celebrated
We recall our history or consider how we feel about someone else’s, how it makes us think, and knowingly (or otherwise) make it part of our history in a mere instant.
Since 2015, Jonathon Harris’s practice has used memory as its foundation stone, and the works included in The assumption of memory are the result of a meditation on memorial through performance actions, performed paintings, objects, AI imagery and performance documentation.
From the recreation of a smashing mirror in a bomb blast to the ripping and repairing of scarred fabric at the mention of a death, these works are here to expose our differences and our similarities.
Our humanity and what we remember of it.
